On the Croatian island of Lošinj, in the coastal village of Nerezine, an extraordinary garden project is taking shape: THE NEREZINE GARDEN PROJECT. Spanning over 2,000 square meters, the garden will blend the Mediterranean’s natural essence with an exotic diversity of plants – a place of peace, creativity, and sustainable togetherness.


The Idea

The Nerezine Garden Project is a private initiative born from a deep connection to nature, the island, and the art of gardening. The goal is to create a unique garden space that is both botanically and visually inspiring. Mediterranean and native plants will enter into a vivid dialogue with carefully selected exotic species – colorful, fragrant, and diverse.

But this project is about more than aesthetics. It is a conscious engagement with climate, soil, water, and traditional building techniques. The garden is envisioned as a space to slow down, explore, and connect – with nature, with others, and perhaps even with oneself.


The Site

The property lies on a gentle north-facing slope, with partial views of the sea. To make the best use of the terrain and prepare it for planting, it will be carefully terraced in several stages. This will create distinct garden areas, each with its own character – shady places for rest, sunny planting terraces, and inviting spots for gathering and relaxation.

A key design element will be traditional dry stone walls, made from natural stone, just as they have shaped the cultural landscape of the region for centuries. These walls will not only support the terraces but also create microclimates, provide habitats for wildlife, and enhance the garden’s authentic character.



A Long-Term Vision

The NEREZINE GARDEN PROJECT is designed as an open-ended, evolving endeavor. It is meant to grow slowly, sustainably, and organically – with the seasons, with the people involved, and with the shared vision of creating a truly special place.

In the future, the garden will regularly open its doors to visitors – for guided tours, workshops, small cultural events, or simply as a space for contemplation and inspiration.

​To bring this vision to life, support of all kinds is warmly welcomed. We are looking for:

  • People with ideas: creatives, botanists, gardeners, artists, or landscape architects

  • People ready to take action: craftspeople, stonemasons, helpers for terracing, planting, and maintenance

  • People with resources: donations of materials, plants, tools, or financial contributions
